Bible Reading Basics

Leader: Pastor Don George

Class DescriptionAre you new to Bible reading and wondering where to start? Maybe you’re a more mature Christian who’s hoping to enhance their time in the word or perhaps would like to know more about discipling a less mature believer and are looking for help in studying the Bible together.

During our time together this session, we’ll discuss the “Why” and the “How” of effective Bible reading. We’ll unpack the good (and not so good) ways that people approach time in the word, and endeavor to lay a solid foundation for this important spiritual discipline. We’ll look at several popular methods, in hopes that you’ll find one (or more) that help you to cultivate good study and also look at some additional tools to use along the way.

Homework: Bible Reading and Study

The Book of James

Leader: Darald Trinka

Class DescriptionYou’re a disciple of Christ, right? You know you’re saved by grace not by work, of course. You’ve heard of the Royal Law, right? Are you confused by the obvious contradiction between Paul and James? You may ask, “So gentlemen, are we justified by faith or by works? Please! Get your story straight!”  Has this disturbed you? Perhaps you have heard that Paul and James are, in fact, not in conflict, but do you understand why?

Given our right standing with God, are you looking for a practical guide on how to live a holy life, which lives out the Royal Law? If so, James is your book!

In this session we’ll explore all of this. As is my (Darald) norm, this will NOT be a series of lectures, but an interactive dialogue where you will drink deeply from the book of James. We’ll employ context, identify key phrases, understand the flow of thought, bring in cross references to other books, encourage journaling and reflection, and ask probing questions. Expect this to advance your love of the Lord, your sanctification, and your desire to lay down your life for others.
